General information for newly Registered/ Enrolled nurses
Once registered as a nurse/ midwife (except those on Provisional Registration), you can access your SNB account using Singpass.
For foreigners, you will need to apply for a Singpass account after you have obtained your Workpass. Please visit www.singpass.gov.sg for more details.
2. What You Need to Know About Your Nursing Registration / Enrolment.
About Singapore Nursing Board (SNB)
SNB is the only regulatory authority for nurses and midwives in Singapore.
Its scope and functions are defined in the Nurses and Midwives Act 1999 for the purpose of registration and enrolment of nurses, the registration of midwives and the certification of Advanced Practice Nurses and related matters.
About Your Registration/ Enrolment
Before you commence practice, do take note of the guidelines that directly impact your practice, namely Code for Nurses and Midwives; Scope of Professional Nursing & Midwifery Practice, and Core Competencies and Generic Skills for Registered Nurses (RN), Enrolled Nurses (EN), Registered Midwives (RMW) and Registered Nurses (Psychiatric) (RNP).

When you have SNB account, you may perform the following:
Nurses/ Midwives are required to inform SNB of any changes in particulars mentioned below (most importantly your employment as a nurse or in a nursing role) within 28 days of the change. [Nurses and Midwives Act 1999 Section 13 (3)]
(a) For changes to your Marital Status and/or Religion
(b) For changes to your Contact details
(c) For changes in Nationality and Residency Status
(e) For changes in Employment Details
(2) Update Additional Nursing Qualifications
(a) Enrolled Nurses who subsequently obtained Diploma in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing locally will need to submit an application online for registration as a Registered Nurse. Please do not submit an application online for Additional Qualifications.
(b) Graduates with Diploma/ Advanced Diploma in Nursing (Midwifery or Mental Health) will need to submit an application online for registration as Registered Midwife or Registered Nurse (Psychiatric) respectively. Please do not submit an application online for Additional Qualifications.
(3) Maintain Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Records
(a) Be updated with the latest nursing trends by attending talks and seminars.
(b) Monitor and claim your own CPE points.
(4) Renew Practising Certificate (PC)
(a) It is the responsibility of the individual nurse/ midwife to apply and pay for the yearly renewal of the Practising Certificate (PC). [Nurses and Midwives Act 1999 Section 18 (4)]
(b) It is an offence under the Nurses and Midwives Act 1999 to practise nursing/ midwifery without a valid PC.
(c) The PC expires on 31 December every year. Application for the renewal of PC for the following year starts from September to November annually. For applications made after 30 November, the SNB Fee for Late Application/ Renewal of Practising Certificate shall apply. Please ensure your employment records and other particulars are correct.
(d) Nurses/ Midwives are responsible for maintaining their competency in order to remain eligible for the renewal of their PC. Nurses/ Midwives who have not practised nursing for a continuous period of 5 years are required to attend a Return-to-Nursing (RTN) programme before they can practise nursing again.
(e) Nurses who have not practised nursing for a continuous period of 4 years since registration/ enrolment are required to seek employment in inpatient settings and undergo 6 months of Competency Assessment (CA).
(5) Nursing Guidelines and Standards
Do refer to them regularly for updates.
For nurses without restriction on their registration/ enrolment, do take note of the guidelines on “Guidelines for Agency Nurses/ Midwives and Nursing Agencies Engaging Them”.
(6) For nurses on conditional registration/ enrolment, to take note of the following:
(a) Transfer of Conditional Registration/ Enrolment
i. For nurses/ midwives on conditional registration/ enrolment who wish to change employment or work in a different place of practice, their new prospective employer must submit a Nurse Transfer application for SNB’s review and approval.
(b) Home Care Settings, Ambulatory Settings and Welfare Homes
i. For nurses who wish to practise nursing in home care settings, ambulatory settings and welfare homes, they must have at least 2 years of continuous nursing practice (in acute hospitals, community hospitals or nursing homes only) with one employer in Singapore.
ii. This 2-year continuous practice must be completed in the last one year to ensure recency of practice.
(c) Nurses on conditional registration/ enrolment cannot practise as Agency Nurses/ Midwives.
